Welcome to Octobers News Letter 10 - 15 - 2010
October is is here! The news on TVkeeps telling us "It will be one of the coolest winter ever!" We here in the Northwest understand cool. We also know how important it is to be prepared. Here are some good ideas to help keep you comfortable and safe while the weather becomes colder.
Number 1 Inspect your filter. Filters can be in different locations. Either above or below. Some can even be located at the return grills. When you see the filter you are actually wanting to see "DIRT" that means its been working properly. Disposable are simple to replace. Now, Electric Air Cleaners or high end (Life Time Filters) need your attention! Any restrictive or blocked filter will play havc with your furnace causeing over heating and even damage! So clean or replace now.
Number 2 "Flammable" well away from your furnace I am not speaking of your gas can either. I mean aerosol can that can combust, paint is actually flammable. All cardboard, news paper should not be stored near or around your furnace. Move and give that furnace breathing room! Oh yea move that gas can too!
Number 3 Furnace service is a good a rule of thumb! Within the first six years have it done every other year then every year after that. Some people ask why do I need to keep up on such a thing? My answer is: "What you don't know CAN hurt you". Just like any other piece of equipment it needs to be maintained and looked after, I can not tell you how many times I get to a furnace after 4 plus years and its never been look at! and the filter was never changed, its true.
Number 4 Test you thermostat see how many degrees it takes before it reacts to coming on. That will give you a good idea the degree of difference it will take for your furnace to turn on. It may be even time to replace that old thermostat. Many old styles contain mercury! BAD STUFF! The new digitals range from basic to quite fancy, From $50 on up. Most thermostats have a three degree range before they will react just to let you know. When you are setting your thermostat only set it down no more that 5 degrees. If you do if more the furnace is actually running longer and sometimes never gets to desired temperature before you leave in the morning or when you return.
Number 5 Gas, oil, electric furnaces are all called "forced air heating system" meaning the air coming out of those floor register is above 90 plus degrees sometimes as high as 115 degrees! The air is also very very dry. That is very hard on you and your family so when you are working in one place or sleeping for at least 2 or more hours make sure the vent is not blowing directly upon you or your children, but redirect it away or upward. It will still warm the room no problem. For anymore questions just give me a call. I am personally waiting to hear from you!
